It's pitch 暗 dark, so he trips and falls and busts his head through the bathroom door. An 音 alarm goes off, alerting the entire neighborhood there is a thief! The lights turn on, eliminating the 暗 dark, making the bathroom as bright as the 日 sun. Actually, the bathroom light is a little miniature 日 sun, to be precise.
